SEMH and Neurodiversity

These following clips are taken from a series of online training videos in a presentation and discussion format, by Tori Wright and Dr Rob Long. They consider SEMH particularly in relation to Neurodiversity:

Session 1a: The nature of inclusion and the importance of understanding and delivering the key principle of equity, as well as equality.

Session 1b: Traditional theories of neurodiversity – debunked. There is no ‘normal’ brain.

Session 2a: A consideration of disability models: medical; social; biopsychosocial; and bioecological.

Session 2b: Understand more about the sources and impact of particular viewpoints and beliefs.

Session 3a: Prejudice, negative stereotypes, stigma and social exclusions – considering the impact of these on self, personhood and agency.

Session 3b: A closer look at innacuracies in these mechanisms, and a reminder of ‘schematics’ and ‘heuristics’ – shortcuts to beliefs and opinions.

Session 4a: Considering the impact of the physical environment, the behaviour of others, and supportive, protective factors.

Session 4b: Understanding the impact of our classrooms and our teaching behaviours. Considering methods to reduce barriers in education for all neurotypes.

‘Sanctions don’t work for many children’

Dr Rob Long expands on some of his key mantras which have successfully improved our ability to understand and support children with Social Emotional and Mental Health needs.

Rob is a National Council member of SEBDA and tutor on the Postgraduate Diploma and MA in SEMH at Oxford Brookes University.
